At our Rehabilitation Centre, we care for chimpanzees and macaques recovering from mistreatment. These animals were once circus or television performers, advertising models, or even kept as pets.

This is a form of abuse that, until recently, remained invisible in our society. Many have spent years in complete isolation and in terrible conditions. However, our rehabilitation centre offers an excellent home for these rescued primates, where they recover by living in family groups with their own kind, in a natural environment.

MONA gives them this much‑deserved second chance to live a more dignified life, free from suffering.

La Fundació

Our mission

RESCUE AND REHABILITATION

The mission of Fundació MONA is to rescue primates living in dire conditions. At our centre, we rehabilitate them both physically and mentally, and offer them a life within a group. Primates are social, long‑lived, and highly intelligent animals who suffer greatly in captivity. Since returning them to their natural habitat is not possible, we strive to ensure they live a more dignified life in the company of their peers, rich in stimulation and with all the respect they deserve.

Farewell, Jane Goodall. The legacy of a pioneer

Jane Goodall has passed away, and with her, we’ve lost one of the brightest lights in the fight for nature and for primates. For those of us who have dedicated our lives to protecting chimpanzees, Jane was far more than an inspiration — she was a guiding light, a steady voice, and a constant source of hope.

MONA’s chimpanzees help science discover that yawns are contagious… even from a robot!

Can a chimpanzee catch a yawn… triggered by an android? The answer is yes. This is confirmed by an innovative study recently published in the journal *Nature Scientific Reports*, led by researchers Ramiro Joly-Mascheroni and Beatriz Calvo-Merino from City St George’s University of London, in which the chimpanzees rescued by Fundació MONA played a leading […]
