Chimpanzee

HI, MY NAME IS JUANITO

Date of birth: January 2003
Place of birth: in captivity, Tenerife
Date of arrival at MONA: December 17, 2003

Subspecies: hybrid of Pan troglodytes troglodytes x Pan troglodytes verus

He was born in a zoo in Tenerife where he was soon separated from his mother. His owner tried to sell him to an animal trafficker. A colleague of ours alerted the Customs Authorities and a few weeks later they confiscated Juanito. Months of legal disputes followed, as the zoo owner appealed against the confiscation and Juanito had to stay temporarily at a local veterinary clinic. Finally, the court decided that Juanito would live out his life at MONA.

ABOUT JUANITO

His past

He arrived at MONA at just one year of age from a zoo in Tenerife. He had a strong repetitive rocking behavior while hugging a pile of straw, due to the premature separation from his mother.

In less than two months of association he was already integrated into the group without any problems. He established a very strong bond with Waty, a female in the group who played the role of his mother.

His present

The baby that arrived is already far behind, now he is a young adult male. While a few years ago he was the most rebellious and “crazy” in the center, for some time now we have noticed him more serious than before, he has grown up.

He has developed into a strong and robust chimpanzee and, despite being less playful, he has not lost his friendly character.

His social life

When he turned eight, we started his association with the new group, as he needed older friends to interact with. Since then, he has been part of the Mutamba group and, despite being the youngest, has achieved an important place within the group hierarchy.

It is common to find him always participating in everything, both in demonstrations of strength and of affection.

Juanito likes

  • Eating carrots

Since he arrived, he has a soft spot for this tuber.

  • Challenges

He really likes the enrichments the keepers prepare for him. He loves all activities that require manipulation. He is very good at using sticks to solve problems and get food.

  • Being with others

He loves grooming sessions. And also tickling, although sometimes he doesn't measure his strength well and can be a bit abrupt.

Anecdotes
He met his first chimpanzee the day after he arrived here. We introduced him to Bongo, who was two years older than him. Bongo approached him with great interest and Juanito responded by slapping him on the head! Brave from day one!
Anecdotes

His rescue and integration were recorded by National Geographic cameras and can be seen in the Diarios de Chimpancé series.

Anecdotes

When Juanito is interested in something, he makes a very characteristic sound with his lips. He’s been making it since his first months of life and every time he focuses his attention on something, he makes it again.
