An intelligent and very outgoing female who comes from a French zoo. She is the youngest of MONA.

Her past

Mayumba was born at the La Flèche zoo. She is Hugo’s only child, the first chimpanzee that came from the same zoo because of his mental health problems.

She lost her mother when she was only 3 years old. Hugo took good care of her i she always had Caline as well, who also took her in.

From the hammock she suspiciously inspects what's outside after spending her first night at MONA.

Her present

She still has many fears to overcome, because despite being in her teens, she lacks the audacity of her age.

However, when meeting new chimpanzees she brazens it out, and so far she has greeted everyone with shouts and bad manners. She is very suspicious and fear makes her overreact. Once she establishes bonds and loses her fear, she is a great companion.

Her social life

Her social life before MONA had been very constant and limited to a small group of 3 individuals. Since she has been here, her circle has expanded with Suzie, with whom she has become very close over time. They spend many hours sharing a hammock, together in the sun. And the introductions to what will be her future group are progressing, but at the moment she is not making it very easy, she is one of the warriors.

She uses them to move around the outdoor installations, as if playing “the ground is lava.” As she is gaining more confidence, she spends more time on the ground.

Instead of using straw, she prefers to make her nests with this other material, which she carries with her to her favorite hammocks or platforms.

She is the first chimpanzee we have met that did not rush into her new room the night she arrived.
