Chimpanzee

HI, MY NAME IS COCO

Date of birth: approximately 1990
Place of birth: Equatorial Guinea
Date of arrival at MONA: May 14, 2012

Subspecies: Pan troglodytes troglodytes

She was acquired as an infant by its former owner. He bought her in a place in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, through a seller from a pet stall on Las Ramblas. Given her age and origin, it is suspected that she was illegally introduced inside a container in the port of the city.

ABOUT COCO

Her past

Her owner, at first, kept her at home and she lived with the family. Later, she started to live in a cage that her owner had built, together with two chimpanzees who arrived later, Bea and Tom, from a circus.

Coco lived with Bea and, sometimes, also with Tom, who was not always with them because sometimes he attacked them out of frustration or boredom. Her former owner, after meeting on several occasions with wildlife experts from FAADA and MONA, agreed to give them up, thinking about the primates’ well-being.

Relax

Her present

She is one of the chimpanzees who enjoys the most the possibilities offered by the MONA facilities. Intelligent and playful, she loves the enrichments given to her and explores all the options that each new challenge offers her. She is quite calm, persevering and does not get frustrated easily. She has a particularly penetrating gaze and always pays close attention to everything.

Her social life

Coco is a very calm and sociable chimpanzee. She likes to be in her friend’s company, whether enjoying a relaxing grooming session or looking for a playmate. But she also enjoys her time alone, which she spends entertaining herself with some game.

She has proven to be a very balanced and empathetic chimpanzee with new rescues, and is usually one of the first friends that newcomers make.

Coco likes

  • The sand and playing

She loves playing with the sand, making piles that she moves from side to side, and, in general, all the enrichments that allow her to manipulate elements.

  • Vegetation

She really enjoys hiding among the bushes in the outdoor facility and makes huge nests with the grass.

  • Carrying things on her back

A piece of wood, a piece of fabric or an endive! She is the expert and carries her favorite objects around everywhere.

Anecdotes

When she arrived, she spent several weeks going through every element of the dormitories and association cages from head to toe. There wasn’t a single screw left to check!

Anecdotes

When heat arrives, many nights she prefers to sleep under the stars and refuses to enter the bedrooms, much to the frustration of her keepers…
