MONATYC

MONA Training Youth for Conservation

MONATYC is a professional training programme designed for those wishing to enter the field of nature conservation. It provides the knowledge and essential skills required to carry out high-quality work within international institutions dedicated to protecting wildlife and its habitats.

Key Features

This is an on-site training programme lasting over 400 hours, delivered across 16 weeks at the facilities of the MONA Foundation.
It is an intensive course, and therefore not recommended to combine with a job or other studies, as it would be difficult to complete successfully.
All MONATYC lecturers are sector professionals who work with and collaborate alongside the MONA Foundation.

The programme consists of three blocks: Theoretical Modules, Projects, and Practical Training.

BLOCK 1: Theoretical Module

  • 1. Primate caregiving

Introduction to the care of primates in captivity, and to the role of sanctuaries and rescue centres, taking as a reference the mission and history of the MONA Foundation.

  • 2. Animal Welfare and Environmental Enrichment

An introduction to the welfare of wild animals in captivity, with a focus on environmental enrichment. Design of a viable and sustainable enrichment programme over time.

  • 3. Ethological Observation and ZooMonitor

Introduction to ethological observation methodologies, the use of the ZooMonitor observation software, and an introduction to behavioural data analysis.

  • 4. Primate Health and Veterinary Science

Introduction to primate medicine, parasitology and haematology of great apes, as well as the analysis of faecal and blood samples.

  • 5. Primate Conservation

Introduction to the conservation of primates and their natural habitats, covering logistical, legal, financial, biological, environmental, and social aspects, among others.

  • 6. Environmental Education

Introduction to environmental education aimed at local communities (both schoolchildren and adults) living in areas inhabited by primates, with a focus on the protection of ecosystems, wildlife, and primates in particular.

  • 7. Management and Strategies in Conservation

Introduction to institutional management, economic strategy, project planning, and the financing of conservation projects, among other aspects.

BLOCK 2

The projects

These assignments are to be developed over several days or weeks to explore the different topics in greater depth. The subjects of these projects are linked to the various international conservation institutions with which we collaborate through our conservation network. A total of four projects must be completed during the training to graduate successfully.

Enrichment

Design an enrichment activity for primates by following all the steps of the SPIDER framework (Setting goals, Planning, Implementation, Documentation, Evaluation, and Re-adjustment).

Observations

Carry out observations of the primates living at MONA. The projects will be related to animal management and welfare.

Data Analysis

You will learn how to analyse chimpanzee behaviour and produce reports focused on their welfare.

Environmental Education

Draft an environmental education plan applicable to the local population of an in situ primate conservation project.

  • Care of Primates in Captivity

Involvement in the daily activities of the animal care department: cleaning, diet preparation, support in handling, and more.

  • Environmental Education

Participation in the daily activities of the education department. Involvement in the widest possible range of courses and age groups.

  • Conservation Methods (Camera Trapping, Transects, and GPS)

Application of tools for monitoring and carrying out censuses of wild animals in their natural habitats.
