Macaque

HI, MY NAME IS KATY

Date of birth: 2001
Place of birth: in the wild
Date of arrival at MONA: 2002

Species: Macaca sylvanus

Her owner used her to take pictures with tourists on the Costa Brava. We found out about her existence because it was the same owner who, upon seeing us at a fair, approached to get rid of her at that very moment. Once we alerted the authorities, a few days later we went to the address the owner had given us in L’Estartit.

When we arrived, he had already abandoned the apartment and the country, leaving Katy chained inside, without food or water.

ABOUT KATY

Her past

She was the first macaque to arrive at MONA. When she arrived she was very young, but she was already showing signs of stress due to being separated from her mother when she was little and due to her lack of socialization. She was very humanized.

The original idea was for her to stay here only as long as necessary until we found a center with more macaques to live with, since in 2002 we still did not have facilities for macaques at MONA. She was put on a waiting list for several centers, but as the months passed she showed more and more self-aggressive behaviors, as a way of managing her frustration.

After eight months, she was still on the waiting list, so we decided to rescue other macaques that had been intercepted and start a social group, of which she was a good leader for a few years.

Katy now

Her present

She lost leadership of the group a few years ago. She was dethroned by Pipa, the other female in the group.

Although at the beginning of the change she was second in the hierarchy, for some years now she has been in a changing position, because in the hierarchy of the group, Pipa is the dominant one and the others are far below, fighting not to be the last.

But apart from the power struggles, it is easy to find her grooming Pipa in the sun or looking for seeds and chillies in the grass.

Her social life

Since she lost her position as leader, her life and that of the group have changed a lot. With her as leader, we could say that life was more harmonious. But in general, life is calm.

Katy likes

  • Nuts

She loves them! Keepers use them as positive reinforcement when she collaborates with handling, whether for veterinary training or simply to move her from one facility to another for cleaning.

  • Threatening people

If you see Katy staring at you and making an "O" with her lips, she is threatening you. Avoid looking her in the eye and continue with what you were doing.

Anecdotes

When Katy sees hawks flying over MONA, she alarm-calls to the whole group. And she does the same with the cats.

Anecdotes

When Katy was first offered a beetle larva, she jumped in fright. Now she eats them in a heartbeat.
