ABOUT TITÍN

His past

He arrived at MONA at about six months of age and was the third macaque we rescued. Even from a young age, he showed self-directed aggression in stressful situations.

His adaptation to the group was not easy, because despite his young age, the two females were very harsh with him. But once integrated and accepted, he became the darling of the group, and it was easy to see him, on cold winter days, snuggled between the two females.

His present

Sometimes we can see that he is going through difficult times. When he is stressed, it is common to see him threatening and attacking his own foot or arm. This self-aggressive behavior is typical in macaques that are not balanced because they have social deficiencies, derived from a premature separation of the mother and the family group. Regarding his physical appearance, he has changed a lot. He has long since become an adult male, and has an imposing appearance and fangs.

His social life

He wants to keep the second place in the hierarchy, trying to provoke fights between the two females, but Katy doesn’t make it easy for him.

Titín likes

  • Eating

He loves carrots, lentils, and fresh grass.

  • Make an appearence

Throwing sticks at visitors, keepers or chimpanzees. His technique resembles that of Olympic hammer throwers: he grabs the stick by one end, spins it quickly around himself and when he has gained momentum, he throws it hard against the fence.

Anecdotes

When Titín was younger, we caught Juanito the chimpanzee throwing carrots to him… for him to eat from his enclosure!

Anecdotes

When chimpanzees fight, Titín gets excited and throws sticks at them, or runs up and down the installation, showing off his strength.
