Chimpanzee
HI, MY NAME IS WATY
Date of birth: 1996
Place of birth: in captivity, Valencia
Date of arrival at MONA: June 30, 2002
Subspecies: hybrid of Pan troglodytes troglodytes x Pan troglodytes verus
Waty is the daughter of two chimpanzees who lived in a truck. She arrived at MONA with Bongo. They were both in very bad conditions: thin, malnourished, and very traumatized. They had been confiscated from a trainer who was using them for shows by the Circo Mundial Italiano because they were undocumented.

ABOUT WATY
Her past
At the time of her rescue she was fully active in the world of show business, but we suspect that she had only a few years left of “usefulness” because she was already showing a very strong and rebellious character.
Although young chimpanzees are usually very interested in their young, Waty did not seem to notice little Bongo crying to ask for her attention. In addition to this strange behavior, Waty spent a lot of time hugging a pile of straw, rocking. This behavior is typical of chimpanzees that have been separated from their mothers as babies, as it helps them to comfort themselves from the lack of maternal hugs.
Her present
She has become a very fast and graceful female. She is very intelligent socially. She understands all the tools for bonding very well and loves to spend hours and hours in grooming sessions.
She still rocks before going to sleep, but in general you could say that she is a very balanced chimpanzee.
